Brilliant Use of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Billions of people from around the world watched the London Olympics opening ceremony and marveled at the beauty, creativeness and majesty of it. But not many knew that the stadium itself was built with 1/10 of the steel that China’s “Bird’s Nest” facility used and includes a tubular roof made of leftover gas pipelines. Today in America TV, a leader in quality, educational programming and an environmental advocate examines the greenness of Games in a large, international city.
London 2012 organizers took great pains to make the entire area more sustainable. More than 4000 trees, 74,000 plants, and 30,000 wetland plants where added to a derelict areas. All structures were built with sustainability in mind. They have temporary roofs and seats. The Aquatic Center has the temporary seats and when the Games are done, the seats are removed and the center’s “wings” can be removed shrinking its capacity from 15,000 to 2,500 making it more local-friendly. Olympic Village, where the athletes stay has a 10,000 foot green roof. Park bridges were constructed using gabion walls which is steel mesh filled with stones and rubble, which came from the demolition of abandoned buildings. This is an excellent example of the reuse and recycle methodology.
